In “Closer,” Goapele speaks of the freedom of reaching a new place in life after feeling stuck, a feeling that right now many may relate to. At first listen, it felt like I was back in the early 2000s watching many love stories like the ones that first introduced me to this song, such as Honey and Hitch, but this week when I heard it was the first time I really listened to what the song was saying. This was the first track on Goapele’s debut album Even Closer that released in 2002. The other day while scrolling, like many times in lockdown, I heard a song that in some ways shaped multiple movies of my childhood, “ Closer,” by Goapele. There are songs that have spanned almost two decades that draw you right back to where you first heard them.
